Scything workshop with Jem Langworthy

  • Four Acre Farm Long Lane Ringwood, England, BH24 3BX United Kingdom (map)

Join scything expert Jem Langworthy at Four Acre Farm to learn how to use your new (or newly acquired) scythe!

This course is aimed to people who already own a scythe, and want to know the best methods for using and caring for your scythe.

This course will include refreshments and a lunch.

Topics covered:

  • Correct setting up of the scythe (positioning of the handles, the hafting angle and the angle of the lay of the blade).

  • Correct posture and swing.

  • Use of whetstones to hone the blade.

  • Introduce the concept of ‘peening’ (i.e. flattening the edge of the blade with a small anvil or peening jig to make it as sharp as possible). Anyone who has a scythe needs to be familiar with the concept of peening and ideally be able to do it themselves.

  • We will also look at the use of different types of blade (grass blades, ditch blades and bush blades) and their use in different tasks.

Tickets are £40pp. Grab your ticket here, spaces are limited.
